Instagram Takeover – Strauss Yawney – cigarettes, detritus, trash, rain

When Strauss Yawney first reached out to us about hosting a Detritus-themed Insta-Takeover, my first thought was: Finding trash in Bushwick? That shouldn’t be too hard. And to be honest, it didn’t look like it was. Strauss found tons of detritus in the streets of Bushwick – cigarette packs, spray cans, latex gloves, scrap metal, PVC pipe…it’s like Bushwick is one big craft project stomping ground (which, you know, it kind of is). What I didn’t realize was how amazingly epic Strauss’ detritus photos would be. They all look like frames from a super dramatic, dark, Academy Award-winning film. I want to blow them all up into huge posters and hang them in my living room and feel like I’m making a real artistic statement. But really, we’ll all know that the statement is all Strauss’.

Strauss is a video artist and photographer who is currently studying at the School of Visual Arts. His thing is shooting trash around the world – apart from Bushwick, he’s also photographed trash throughout NYC and in Turkey.  Scroll down to check out some of the audience faves from his time behind the shutter, and make sure to look at our Instagram page for the rest!
