Farewell, Magda! Thank you for this wonderful retrospective of your time in Bushwick, and your words of neighborhood wisdom. L.A.'s in for a treat :)
I had the exact same experience last night, Daniel, as I imagine millions of us did across the country: We gathered around network news updates with basically chipper hearts only mildly tinged by stress, and enjoyed food, drink, and conversation with friends as the reporting rolled in. But clouds of apprehension slowly rolled over our living rooms as the evening wore on. By 9:00 we had stopped having fun. By 11:00, we were in tears and silence.
I think you're very right that the majority of people who voted for Trump felt previously unheard and unseen by government; who couldn't understand their frustration? Yet this choice they've made is no guarantee (quite far from it, in my opinion) that any of their plights will be lessened.
I hope this jarring event serves as a wake-up call to those of us who don't regularly feel so disenfranchised—as well as to our government—that a lot of people in our country are hurting, and want to be communicated with and trusted.
I also hope that Trump doesn't really care about most of the issues he yelled about during his campaign (that he really just cares about riding around in the big jet), that the next four years are largely uneventful (unless we get some happy surprises!), and that the next president will have learned from all our recent pendulum swings and be able to corral our divided country together.
