Instagram Takeover – Ariel Churnin – Fall foliage, tree, changing colors

Oh fall. Aren’t you beautiful? NYC may be the concrete jungle, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t contain some incredible greenery. Last week, Bushwick resident Ariel Churnin logged into our Instagram for a Fall Foliage-themed Insta-Takover. She’s trained in traditional painting and drawing, and is now getting a degree at SUNY Farmingdale “in either landscape design, horticulture, or both!” Her keen eye for palettes and knowledge of local plant life made her the perfect person to lead us on a tour of the fall foliage of Bushwick. Ariel spent her week using her green thumb to chase down the most impressive trees and shrubs in our neighborhood…and teach us a little bit about the ones she found!

If you like trees – which, who doesn’t? – then you’ll love her shots. And you’ll see some color themes: lots of reds, purples and oranges! Who knew the nature in our neighborhood was so purty? Well, we certainly do now. Scroll down for some fan faves and jump on over to our Instagram feed for the rest!

This #Bushwick TV lover is called Chenopodium album, or Lambsquarters. Various species of Chenopodium can be found in our neighborhood; due to human interference, it’s one of the most pervasive weeds on earth. Without human manipulation of plants and land, there would be no weeds; native plants would take over and the land would return to its natural habitat. @arielechurnin with #weedyafternoons for #Bushwickdaily

Another addition to our #Bushwick #weedyafternoons: Polygonum pensylvanicum, or Pennsylvania Smartweed. It can be distinguished from its cousin Ladysthumb (Polygonum persicaria) by the lack of hairs on the ocrea or sheath that holds the emerging branches. @arielechurnin for #bushwickdaily
