Reporter

July 28th through August 4th

New York is just not the same without nightlife.  It’s easy to look out the window and see piles of trash under a screeching J train and wonder “Why am I here?”  I’m Andrew Spaulding and I’ve taken over the Bushwick Daily’s weekly roundup.  I’ve been active in the NYC music and club scene for over ten years booking shows, working events, and frequenting parties.  I’ve collected the best socially distanced events in Brooklyn in the hopes that they’ll help recall the New York we loved and, perhaps, conjure a light at the end of the tunnel.  Enjoy! and try to remember, you’re here because it is the greatest city in the world.

The Grateful Dead Movie

Nowadays

July 28 & 29, dusk

Nowadays is hands down one of the best clubs in Bushwick for folks with great taste in DJ’s.  During the pandemic they’ve been forced to scale it back but their awesome outdoor seating area, rife with lush plants and strings of dangling bulbs, is open for small party reservations.  Every Tuesday and Wednesday they project music documentaries and films in their garden at dusk so you can socially distance and drink a cold one outdoors.  This week’s film is The Grateful Dead Movie, a collection of backstage footage of the band, concert videos, and some exquisite psychedelic animation.  You must RSVP on the website to attend.

St. Vitus Bar Interviews

Thursday July 30th, 8pm

The famed metal bar St. Vitus in Greenpoint has been airing interviews called “The Age of Quarantine” on Instagram every night at 8pm since the beginning of quar.  They’ve had great contemporary musicians like Chelsea Wolfe or local noise provocateur Dreamcrusher, but also many many legends have shown up like Roger Miret of Agnostic Front, and Buzz Osbourne of The Melvins.  This Thursday is no joke either, Walter Schreifels of legendary Hardcore bands Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits, shows up to talk about the state of the world.

Homies feat. DJ Bianca & Lanowhat

Saturday, Aug 1st 8pm

Bed Stuy locals DJ Bianca and Lanowhat can be found on any given weekend DJing classic hip-hop at great floors like JJ’s Hideaway or Kinfolk.  The times have made them tuck in to a new routine over on twitch but they’re still having a good time and mixing some killer tracks.  Tune in this Saturday to get a dose of jumbled cat vids in the background and Lanneau hyping the “room” over Bianca’s sly mixing.

Baby’s All Right online – DJ SILKY SMOOTH w/ Carol & Drobakid

Monday, Aug 3rd, 8pm

Baby’s All Right is hosting a livestream of DJ Silky Smooth, a misleading name as the artist makes folky grunge-pop akin to early Alex G.  Direct support Carol is a three piece from New York reminiscent of Sharon Van Etten, precious melodies, beautiful harmonies, and introspective lyrics.  A great low-key Monday night for the folky and the brave.
