Tom Gallo is the host of Look at My Records on Radio Free Brooklyn

Radio Free Brooklyn and Bushwick Daily are proud to announce a new weekly local-music column that will focus on artists that call Bushwick home. Each week, a Radio Free Brooklyn personality will pen a record or performance review of a different Bushwick based artist, with a curated selection of the best upcoming local gigs in the neighborhood for the following weekend.

DYGL, Future Punx, Straw Pipes at Alphaville

Future Punx

WHEN: October 23, 8 p.m.

WHERE: Alphaville, 140 Wilson Ave, New York

HOW MUCH: $10

DESCRIPTION: Tokyo based indie rock outfit DYGL are touring the United States and Canada this October in support of their second album, Songs Of Innocence & Experience. The record, which includes the singles ‘Wanna Dance In This Heaven?,” ‘Spit It Out’ and ‘A Paper Dream,” draws from a swath of influences, including Brit-pop and garage rock, and features plentiful fuzzed out riffs and meandering melodies. The Japanese quintet will enjoy local support from dance-punks, Future Punx, and art-rock outfit, Straw Pipes.

Julia Haltigan, Lover, 79.5 at Turk’s Inn

WHEN: October 24, 8 P.M.

WHERE: The Sultan’s Room at Turk’s Inn, 234 Starr St, New York

HOW MUCH: $10

DESCRIPTION: New York City’s Julia Haltigan has been quite busy over the last few years. Whether it’s performing in the off-Broadway hit Sleep No More or playing with her band Sugar for Sugar (her fizzy pop band with Scarlett Johansson, Este Haim, Kendra Morris and Holly Miranda), Haltigan stands out for her vintage and gritty  sounding voice that’s quintessentially New York. She also has a budding solo career, as evidenced by her latest sweltering love song “Debris of Love,” which appears on her new album,Trouble, which is set for release this Friday. Thursday night at The Sultan Room is the official release celebration with additional performances from Lover and 79.5

Jay Som, Gia Margaret, Boy Scouts at Elsewhere

Jay Som

WHEN: October 25, 6 P.M.

WHERE: Elsewhere Hall at Elsewhere, 599 Johnson Avenue, Brooklyn

HOW MUCH: $17 – $20

DESCRIPTION: The inimitable Jay Som shared her second full length, Anak Ko, back in late August. It’s a bigger, more expansive sounding record when compared with the subdued bedroom pop of her debut, Everybody Works. Singer-songwriter Gia Margaret, who recently released her enchanting folk debut There’s Always Glimmer,  will also be performing, along with Boy Scouts, the folk-country project of Oakland-based multi-instrumentalist Taylor Vick.

Pynkie, King Jane, Spritzer at Our Wicked Lady

PYNKIE

When: October 26, 7:30 P.M.

Where: Our Wicked Lady, 153 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn

Description: If you haven’t gotten acquainted with PYNKIE yet, now is a good time to brush up on her shimmering, lo-fi songs. The Jersey City based bedroom-pop artist is currently working on the follow up to her 2018 debut, Neoteny, and has released a series of great stripped down demo singles in recent months, including a mesmerizing cover of Liz Phair’s “Flower.” Local indie-psych quartet King Jane and indie-surf project Spritzer, who released a wavy and summer-sounding EP, Not Allowed, earlier this year are also on the bill.
