In this latest edition of Bushwick Music Crush, we’re offering a glimpse into the future. That’s right, Brooklyn; no need to adjust your computer screens. Last weekend at Glasslands, we blasted up, up and away into the far reaches of the galaxy, and all the while, never even lost grip of our beer. Our trusty vessel? The stellar tunes of Brooklyn’s own Future Punx. When these post-wave space heads first caught our attention as opening act for Parquet Courts and Yuppies at Music Hall of Williamsburg, we knew it was lust at first listen. Scroll through for photos from Future Punx’s most recent set, plus more on this local band’s cool, totally crush-worthy sounds.

Dressed to the nines with sophisticated sounds to match, Future Punx opened with the jolt of “999,” an electrifying dance number that first set toes tapping. Thanks to their clever blend of slick guitar jangle and groovy rhythms, it’s easy to get lost while riding the band’s futuristic vibes (of course, the fog machine definitely helps). All at once sprightly and sleek, theirs is an appealing mix of retro and modern that fans of bands like Talking Heads and Devo– so basically, everyone– will undoubtedly dig. Plus, hello! Getta load of that keytar!

Future Punx were responsible for kicking off Ejecta’s album release party, where North Texas was well represented; they laid expert groundwork for the goth-inspired freak-outs of Vulgar Fashion and the sultry-smooth pop sounds of the aforementioned (and usually nude) duo of honor. Fittingly, Future Punx also claim origins in Texas. Though formed in Brooklyn in the not-so-distant past, all members met through their associations with other bands, among them Teenage Cool Kids, Wax Museums, and Fergus & Geronimo. Now, Future Punx are readying the release of their first 7” single, out early 2014 on Dull Tools, the label frontman Chris Pickering runs with Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts.

At Glasslands, each Future Punx track morphed into an electro jam session anchored by steady beats, rolling bass lines, and pulsing, ever-dynamic effects. By the time things wrapped up with the zippy “Livin in a Movie,” we were essentially hooked on this futuristic feeling. While you’ll have to wait for the new year to catch this uber-hip quartet live (they hit Glasslands again on 1/3 with Yvette and The Christines), you can still get your Future Punx groove on with the band at their R Bar monthly DJ residency, every first Friday beginning December 6.
