Regardless of your age, the infectious craving for stability and structure that comes with the end of summer is inevitable. As we step out of the summer haze we yearn for something to awaken our minds and fill the absence of starting another school year that has been ingrained in us for so long. Fortunately, there are numerous creative classes and workshops that are taking place this autumn in the Bushwick/Ridgewood area for those not in school to continue learning.

BUSHWICK COMMUNITY DARKROOM

Whether you already shoot film, want to learn a new developing process, or are a complete beginner, Bushwick Community Darkroom hosts various classes and workshops for anyone interested in getting into film photography.

Starting the first week of September going through November, the darkroom will have four week-long classes: Intro to Black and White Photography, Black and White Printing for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, and an Intro to Camera class, all of which can be purchased individually or as a bundle for 25 percent off. They also host a two-hour workshop on color printing in which students can learn the basics of color printing in a darkroom.

Art Apple, a Bushwick-based gallery and art space will be teaming up with Brunch and Budget, hosting a series of financial workshops to help artists learn how to manage their finances in balance with their creative pursuits. There will be three workshops starting on August 29 that will go on through September:

8/29 - How to start investing, even if you’ve never done it before

In this workshop you will learn how to create a savings plan that includes investing regularly, the basics of investing, about your 401k, and much more.

9/12 - Beyond Budgeting: How to automate your finances and build real wealth

In this workshop you will understand your current relationship with money, create a spending plan, get strategies on how to save, and much more.

9/26 - The Credit Hustle: How to overcome, even when the game is rigged.

In this workshop you will learn to check and read your credit report regularly, prioritize what to pay off and when, and much more.

The workshops are open to anyone in a creative field. Art Apple focuses on discovering and supporting both local and international artists from fine arts to fashion to music. They also have a list of classes, workshops, and talks always listed on their website for anyone looking to learn a new skill or about a new artist.

Art Shack, a non-profit ceramics studio in Bed-Stuy, will start their next eight-week session of adult classes on September 8. Their classes range from beginner to advanced, “offering everything you can imagine relating to ceramics: hand-building, wheel throwing, glazing, plaster mold-making, and slip casting,” as stated on their website.

As a non-profit studio, ArtShack focuses on the creative process and refining skills more so than creating a perfect end piece. They also have classes for couples, families, and children offered on their website.

Other Classes:

Supermoon Art Center, an art space and daycare center in Ridgewood will also be releasing their fall schedule at the end of September.

The Living Gallery hosts a Drink + Draw every Wednesday Night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

MayDay Space, a community organization and social justice hub also hosts workshops, like Photo Journalism and cooking classes, which they post on Facebook.
