Earth Day is on Monday, April 22 this year. Celebrated since 1970, the mission is to diversify, educate and activate an environmental movement to create a greener future and preserve our planet.

By switching to biodegradable materials, energy sufficient solutions at home and at the office, participating in neighborhood clean-ups, and including more fresh produce in your diet, you can take small steps to a sustainable future.

Bushwick Daily put together how you can contribute to a greener lifestyle and celebrate with the community this week!

1. House of Yes presents Earth Love Fest

Sunday, April 21 from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

House of Yes is hosting the first annual Earth Love Fest to honor Earthing Day 2019 to inspire your green life. The festival is a celebration between conservationist organizations, artists, musicians, climate experts, eco-fashionistas, and more. Proceeds from the event will go towards Oceanic Global, a nonprofit organization driving the adoption of sustainable practices amongst individuals and companies.

With the announcement House of Yes is transforming into a completely green venue, switching all plastic to eco-friendly alternatives and working closely with Oceanic Global to continue making sustainable business choices that support the environment.

RSVP here.

2. daya yoga and Clean Bushwick Initiative

Saturday, April 20, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.

With the spring weather finally kicking in, join a yoga class at Maria Hernandez Park with Daya Yoga, that will be followed by a neighborhood park clean-up, with Clean Bushwick Initiative.

“Earth Day is everyday,” Daya Yoga told Bushwick Daily. “Just a reminder on this special day to honor our mother pachamama and practice the teachings of yoga at the park, followed by a clean-up as service to our community and planet on Earth Day and everyday.”

Monday, April 22, 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

On Earth Day itself, you can have a tea ceremony and guided meditation at the park with Daya Yoga in the morning, but if you’re busy, don’t worry. Daya Yoga will have an evening celebration at their studio with a candlelit flow, focusing on connecting to the earth, all with live music.

3. The wally shop

The Wally Shop is America’s first sustainable grocery delivery service, with their headquarters in Bushwick. Instead of single-use plastic and cardboard packaging, goods are packed into mesh bags and mason jars, and are delivered via bike courier.

Check them out at the Earth Love Fest on Sunday, as they will be hosting a panel. Wally Shop will host an Earth Week challenge on Instagram, too! Every day they will be showcasing a unique way to use Wally Shop packaging to prevent waste, inviting community members to participate. A winner will  select a random winner who will receive a gift! Announcement will happen on Sunday!

In the meantime, you can get greener starting with your fridge and pantry.

4. Precycle

Precycle, Bushwick’s (and the East Coast’s) first bring-your-own-container zero-waste store, will also be paneling at the Earth Love Fest with House of Yes. The store aims to reduce waste and raise awareness on sustainability. They offer great fresh produce and pantry staples, as well as greener solutions for the home with chemical-free makeup and cleaning products.

“Earth is our home and we must remember it everyday,” said founder Katerina Bogatireva to Bushwick Daily. “On Earth Day we come together as a community, to learn from each other, inspire and be inspired.”

After the earthly celebrations, stop by at 321 Starr St off the Jefferson L to load up on healthy grains, laundry detergent, and shampoo bars, while staying environmentally friendly.
