Drinking at our local watering holes here in Bushwick is great, but sometimes, we’re itching to get out of the city and find some new brews to enjoy fresh from the source.

Each of these breweries has active tap rooms, and each one is accessible by public transit no more than a 2.5 hour scenic ride from Bushwick.

 Broken Bow Brewery

This family-operated Westchester County brewery is a small operation with nine rotating beers on tap. The appeal here is that limited availability means rare sips of seasonal, fruity sours and speciality aged beers. Free tours of the facility are available on Saturdays, but a reservation is required.

 Captain Lawrence Brewing Company

444 Saw Mill River Rd. Elmsford, New York (White Plains Metro North Station- Harlem Line + Bus)

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company has grown into a craft beer mainstay in the last 10 years, but not everyone knows that the brewery’s taproom is so close to home. They brew over 100 different styles a year, way more than what you usually see represented on bodega shelves.

Tour tickets are $7, but it’s worth it for an operation that big.

Saturday, September 9 is also the brewery’s annual sour event, “Sour’d in September,” with over 100 sours on tap, food, and live music. But you’ll have to get tickets for that, too.

 Peekskill Brewery

47 S Water St, Peekskill, NY (Peekskill Metro North Station- Hudson Line)

Peekskill Brewery is equal part taproom and restaurant. Food includes brewpub faves like burgers and wings in addition to more inventive offerings. Go before fall begins and take advantage of their huge patio. After you fill up on IPAs and other hoppy offerings, head down to the river to get some fresh air before heading back into the grime of the city.

Also, little known fact: Mel Gibson spent his childhood in Peekskill before moving to Australia. Weird, right?

 Newburgh Brewing Company

88 Colden St, Newburgh, NY (Beacon Metro North Station- Hudson Line + Ferry)

Newburgh Brewing Company’s colorful cans are some of the best-designed on the market today, and their taproom is a gorgeous wood and brick room with great Instagram potential. An added perk: you get to take a ferry across the Hudson to arrive at this watering hole.
