Halloween may be over, but the fall festivities aren’t over in Bushwick. What comes next is Dia de los Muertos or Dia de los Difuntos (technically the same thing). The holiday is celebrated in Latin America, though the well known calavera (sugar skull) imagery that is often associated with the tradition is from Mexico. Families hold gatherings, build alters and leave offerings for loved ones who have already passed away. And thanks to the different immigrant communities in and around Bushwick and Ridgewood, there are a number of celebrations this weekend. 

That and since the last attempt to hex Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was so popular, Catland is holding yet another session.

Dia de los Muertos: Ceremony + Yoga in BedStuy

Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 7 p.m.

Attendees at this event get to build a communal altar for their loved ones. Everyone is encouraged to bring photos and other keepsakes for the alter. There’s also an opening ceremony that includes indigenous music will be lead by Cetiliztli Nauhcampa and there will be some devotional yoga afterwards. 


Feast for the Ancestors at Catland

Thursday November 1, 2018 at 7 p.m. 

Not unlink some Dia de los Muertos celebrations, this feast will involve building a communal altar and having a community dinner. Tickets are being sold on Facebook for $20. Half of proceeds will go to the Brooklyn Community Pride Center and to the Southern Poverty Law Center. 


Dia de los Difuntos at Mayday Space

Saturday November 3, 2018 at 6 p.m.

Mayday Space has no shortage of awesome cultural events and this weekend is no exception. There will be food, music, performances and original art for sale. And like the other events, there’s a community ofrenda or offering for loved ones who have passed away. Everyone is encouraged to bring friends and family.

Ritual to Hex Brett Kavanaugh II at Catland

Saturday November 3, 2018 at 7 p.m.

The first Ritual to Hex Brett Kavanaugh was so popular that Catland is holding another session. Like before, they encourage attendees to bring their rage against sexual assault and the patriarchy. There are tickets on Facebook and those who can’t attend can donate. And like their last event, Catland is going to donate 50% of proceeds to Southern Poverty Law Center and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project
