What does "Home" mean to these local students?

The Bushwick Starr is gearing up for its annual eco-playwriting program in which students from local schools get to work with pros in the theater world.

From April 27-29, student playwrights from P.S. 75 and I.S. 77 will debut their work at The Bushwick Starr during its Big Green Theater (BGT) Festival, an annual event celebrating environmental education, sustainability in the arts, and community enrichment. This year, student writers are focusing on the theme of "Home,"contemplating what they love about their own homes and neighborhoods and what they wish to change about them.

BGT is a community-based program that puts Bushwick youth directly in touch with the professional world of theater. For a four-month period every year, The Bushwick Starr holds an afterschool program with local 4th and 5th grade students from public schools, teaching them about playwriting and environmental education. The young writers then create a series of short "eco-plays" inspired by what they're learning.

During the BGT Festival, the plays are performed by an ensemble of professional actors, directors, and designers using only green-theater methods, such as recycled materials for sets and costumes, fluorescent and LED lighting, and paperless programming.

Tickets are available tomorrow. You can check out BGT Festival on Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. for a $20 benefit performance or from April 28-29 for free at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.
