After a brief closure due to a failed fire inspection, Catland Books, Bushwick’s only hybrid occult store and event space, is raising funds to continue improving their space and making sure they’ll be able to host bigger events in the future.

The Indiegogo campaign has set a goal of $20,000 in order to soundproof and insulate the event space and to start a lending library and publishing arm to bring the work of local artists and writers to a larger audience. They have raised about $1,500 so far, but there are two months left to go!

Melissa Madara, co-owner of Catland, tells Bushwick Daily that “while the renovations required by our brief shutdown last winter have been completed, there’s still a lot of work to do to make sure we can continue to hold events like we used to.”

Even a $15 donation includes a nice set of gifts including smudge wands, incense, and crystals as part of a “witch’s gift bag.” If you want to go all out, you can claim a $200 gift which includes a t-shirt, the witch’s gift bag, admission to three events, a 30-minute reading with the owner, and a three-month membership to the store’s new lending library.

The store has been around since 2013, and Madara adds, “over the course of four years, we’ve done some pretty impressive things with the shop, but the last leg deals with heat insulation, soundproofing, and the final touches to take us from a DIY space to an actual venue.”
