Nowadays has announced the lineup of their Monday-night film series with Maysles Cinema, the Harlem-based film house started by the late Albert Maysles in 2008. Starting on June 20th, the Ridgewood bar will be screening nonfiction and mockumentary films at their expansive outdoor space. The series came about when Nowadays co-owner Justin Carter was introduced to the cinema director at Maysles through a filmmaker friend.
“We saw each other outside a screening of a friend’s film at MoMA, and I told him we wanted to do a film series at Nowadays, and he introduced me to Jessica Green, the cinema director at Maysles. The rest is history!,” says Carter.
The chosen nonfiction and mockumentary films will display legendary directors and subjects like Les Blank, Werner Herzog and Julie Taymore. Maysles Cinema has even arranged for D.A. Pennebaker, the nonagenarian who captured this iconic Dylan moment, to come in person and introduce “Monterey Pop,” his film that immortalized Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire in 1967.
As a fitting tribute to the late, great Muhammad Ali, the first film to screen will be the Maysles’ “Muhammad and Larry,” which combines one-of-a-kind, never-before-seen archival footage from the infamous 1980 fight with recently-produced conversations with boxing experts, luminaries, and those who were at the fight. The film’s producer, Laura Coxson, will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions after the screening.
