it’sover

The next two weeks are pretty much my favorite time to be in the city. Everyone’s on vacation, tourists are concentrated into a couple of areas that I never go to anyway, and I can usually get a seat on the subway in the morning! August is also the time when Bushwick is gearing up for the fall season of programming, but not before they lay out the last final drops of the summer into the last few shows of this season. It’s not over yet, so let’s end summer with a bang with these final six special exhibitions that will see us through the rest of the month. See you in September!

#1 In the Office of the Drunken Monkey @ TSA New York (FRI AUG 8, 7-10PM)

44 Stewart Avenue, #49, Brooklyn NY 11237

TSADrunkenMonkey

In what might be the best exhibition title of the summer, TSA New York’s upcoming show conveys the tenuous balance between the structure and discipline of  its artists’ technique and training, with their intuitive abilities that allow them to create the work that they do. Curated by Julian Kreimer and Christopher Ulivo, In the Office of the Drunken Moneky showcases the works of several artists, including Brian Scott Campbell, Rubens Ghenov, Rachael Gorchov, Lucia Hierro, David Humphrey, Julian Kreimer, Margrit Lewzcuk, Dustin London, Rebecca Morris, Dona Nelson and Stephanie Washburn. The exhibition is meant to highlight the way in which artists often either flock to one extreme on the spectrum of order versus chaos, Like Dona Nelson’s wild abstractions or Dustin London’s ordered floor-plan like drawings, while others embrace both extremes like David Humphrey’s flowers that evoke both a frenetic energy and controlled execution.

#2 Kathleen White (A) Rake’s Progress @ Momenta Art (FRI AUG 8, 6-8PM)

56 Bogart Street, Brooklyn NY 11206

KathleenWhite

Momenta Art’s new exhibition, curated by Rafael Sanchez, features selected works by the artist Kathleen White that she created in the summer of 2009. After White’s brother, Chris White, committed suicide, Kathleen went to work creating a series of 71 pastel-on-paper compositions in her brother’s remembrance. In her grief, White found solace and perhaps a semblance of peace in the myriad of colors and a way to channel her pain and energy through the endless grinding and combining of colored pigment on the paper.

#3 TAB 3 @ Bermuda Triangle BK (SAT AUG 9, doors 8pm, show starts at 8:30PM, tickets starting at $7)

175 Stockholm St, Apt 214, Brooklyn NY 11237

TAB3

In an interesting blend of choreographed dance and performance, TAB 3 offers a night of rich aesthetically diverse expression. In what they deem an “active exhibition,” we are unsure exactly what to expect, only know that it looks awesome! Embracing the rich exuberance of the summer, the artists, dancers and performers involved will surely all bring something a little different, providing the viewer with an entirely singular experience! TAB Art Brooklyn is an organization committed to stimulating new pathways in the perception of the arts and break down existing boundaries between the various disciplines.

#4 NURTUREart Presents: Multiplicity: City as Subject / Matter @ UnionDocs (SAT AUG 9, 7:30pm)

322 Union Ave. Brooklyn NY 11211

Image-SubjectMatter

In the fourth iteration of NURTUREart’s summer series Multicplicity, the exhibition that address the changing urban landscapes of today’s cities and the way in which we relate to them, will continue on its nomadic journey to UnionDocs for a screening of films. Featuring works by CPak Studio, Nicholas Keogh, Alice Schivardi, Sasa Tkacenko, and Amir Yatziv, this final instalment of the show will round out the exhibition, which continues at its different venues in Brooklyn and Manhattan through August 29.

#5 The New York Tibetan Art Studio Presents: New Voices @ The Active Space (FRI, AUG 15, 7-10PM)

566 Johnson Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11237

NYTibet

The New York Tibetan Art Studios presents their inaugural exhibition of work from 27 students who work within and are inspired by traditional Tibetan art practices. The works represent the NYTAS mission to preserve the ancient practices and symbolic content yet allowing it to thrive and grow in a contemporary and relevant context.

#6 Brooklyn Collage Collective @ Armature ArtSpace (FRI, AUG 15, 7PM)

CollageCollective

Nestled between brownstones on an unassuming residential street off the Halsey L stop, Armature ArtSpace has been and continues to become a bustling hub for emerging artists. Next Friday they will play host to the Brooklyn Collage Collective third group exhibition. The collage, often an overlooked and under-appreciated medium is given center-stage in this exhibition as the artists involved explore the conventions of the medium and push its boundaries simultaneously. In honor of the opening enjoy the space’s amazing backyard, DJ sets by de Milo + Artists of Paxico Records, and maybe even some vegan baked goods (provided by Armature’s resident chef, Christian!)
