With Bushwick Open Studios a mere 10 days away, many galleries are preparing for openings set for that wild weekend. But as we all know, Bushwick never sleeps and never takes a break from art happenings. Here’s a handful of creative events happening in the next couple of days…

1. VCU Recent MFA Alumni @ 299 Meserole (Friday, 6-9PM)

Despite the rain water flooding parts of the promising new art building on 299 Meserole and hindering its big BOS launch, some of the festivities are happening this Friday! The VCU School of Art Department of Sculpture and Extended Media will present a group exhibition of their recent alumni, and you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to check out the new great building.

2. ENDE TYMES :: NOVO APOCALYPSO @ Silent Barn, (Friday – Sunday, May 24-26)

Silent Barn

“A FESTIVAL OF NOISE, VIDEO ART, AND EXPERIMENTAL LIBERATION.” This event spans Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and features an absurd amount of artists and musicians from all over the country. Each night costs $15, or you can grab a weekend pass for $35. Video screenings only, $7. Silent Barn is located at 603 Bushwick Ave.

3. Closing Reception of Resurrection @ The Active Space, (Friday, May 24, 6-10PM)

We mentioned Resurrection when it opened, and if you still haven’t seen the exciting and elaborate group show curated by James Prez, Friday night is the time to do so. The show is on view on the first floor of The Active Space at 566 Johnson Avenue.

4. Bushwick Soapbox II @ Studio 10, 56 Bogart (Saturday May 25, 6-8PM)

“A Soapbox is a raised platform on which one stands to make an impromptu speech, often about political subject.” So this isn’t your typical gallery show, which is exactly what we like about it. Stop by Studio 10 to participate in or observe this unique event on Saturday night. You can find Studio 10 on the first floor of 56 Bogart.

5. CLAIRE EVANS / NOTENDO / YOUNG MALE @ Outpost Artist Resources (Sunday, May 26, 8pm)

(Courtesy Outpost Artist Resources)

Claire Evans (artist, writer and singer of “conceptual disco-pop band YACHT”) will give a lecture on her work, audio/visual artist Jeff Donaldson will present his project Notendo, and the techno project by the name of Young Male will perform Sunday night. Outpost Artist Resources is located at 1665 Norman Street.

6. Legends of Drafts @ Centotto (Tuesday, May 28, 7-10PM)

Okay, this reception isn’t happening during the weekend, but it’s one not to be missed, right before the madness of Bushwick Open Studios. This group show will feature preparatory drawings and ideas “so you can glimpse some indicative sketches, meaningful items or other types of procedural steps in the creative practices of a range of local artists” (Legends of Drafts press release, Centotto). Centotto can be found at 250 Moore St, #108.
