Company XIV, known for its opulent and immersive theatrical experiences, continues to captivate audiences in Bushwick with its bold reimagining of classic tales through a contemporary, gender-fluid lens. Productions like Queen of Hearts, Cinderella and now Nutcracker Rouge, showcase the company’s signature “sexy twist” on timeless stories, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s vibrant arts scene. Under the visionary leadership of artistic director Austin McCormick, their permanent theater space on Troutman Street has become a sought-after destination for avant-garde entertainment.
Celebrating 15 years in the neighborhood, Company XIV’s “Nutcracker Rouge” presents a dazzling and unique rendition of the holiday classic. This production masterfully combines Tchaikovsky’s iconic score with elements of burlesque, circus, and lavish immersive design, delivering a performance that defies expectations. Known for its high level of talent, inclusive casting and gender fluidity.
The production stars classically trained dancers and cirque-style acts throughout the performance. “I grew up performing in the Nutcracker ballet every year since the age of 5. I’ve always loved the Tchaikovsky score and sweet festive themes. When I founded Company XIV in 2006, I knew I had to make a Nutcracker for adults that celebrated all the things I love- classical dance, burlesque, circus, singing and lavishly immersive design,” McCormick told Bushwick Daily.
One of the most captivating parts of the show is the innovative costume design and casting. Company XIV embraces all sizes, genders, and racial identities, creating a space where performers feel empowered in their sexual identities. One patron in attendance was overheard saying, “Wow this is insane” after a stunning aerial performance with a powerful live singer.
“I think it’s important to continue to expand what the landscape of what classically inspired art looks and feels like. An audience needs to see themselves reflected in the artists and work onstage and I seek to continue to push the boundaries of casting and creation- imaging the XIV troupe and productions in more inclusive and exciting ways,” McCormick said.
The show also maintains some of the classic elements of the Nutcracker, including a performance of Pas de Deux, which was beautifully executed by Megumi Iwama.
Company XIV’s unique burlesque approach to the Nutcracker has been embraced by the Bushwick community. “The neighborhood has a wonderful energy with so much street art, queer bars, nightclubs and performance concepts- it really is where the coolest people seek entertainment and experiences. It’s also right off the Jefferson “L” stop so our many Manhattan fans can get to us easily,” McCormick told Bushwick Daily.
McCormick hopes to expand Théâtre XIV and sister venue Cocktail Magique to other locations. “Beyond Miami, Paris and Las Vegas domination- I want to continue to push myself creatively, work with interesting and unique artists and continue to learn. If there are any theater owners out there in need of a sexy burlesque mainstay- I’m your man.” McCormick says.
