Maybe it’s because everything seems better when considered nostalgically, or maybe the 1990’s MTV Video Music Awards really were just better back in their heyday, but somehow I just can’t get excited to see Katy Perry on Sunday. To be honest, I’d rather be doing something completely different on Sunday afternoon from watching or, god forbid, attending the VMAs, because the sun will be shining, cabs hailed with Uber App will be (almost) free (if you use the code: BKLOVESuberX you get complimentary $20 ride) and there are at least six fun events to attend!

#1 Ridgewood Social’s Waterballoon Fight @ Grover Cleveland Park (SUN 2-4PM, free)

Eclectic social fairy of Ridgewood Sarah Feldman has been pretty active in organizing all sorts of different activities, from the Ridgewood Market to pub meetups to a water balloon fight in a park. But I mean, why not? Put on your swim suit, fill up your balloons with water and bring your (inner) child to Grover Cleveland Park on Sunday.

#2 Velvet Painting Takedown @ The Active Space (SUN 5-8PM, free)

Bushwick is the perfect neighborhood for events like Matt Timms’ Painting Takedown series. This Sunday at 5PM, 20 of New York’s top artists will paint unicorns, Elvises, hula ladiez, and maybe even Obamas on black velvet. Not only will the audience get to eat free vegan chili, they also get to vote to decide which one of the artists will win lots of art supplies. If you’re in the mood for some black velvet painting, they have six canvases left, so go ahead and sign up!

#3 Brokelyn presents: I Want My MTV @ Last Exit Bar (SUN 7PM-midnight, free)

Our pals Brokelyn decided to cut the BS of the contemporary VMAs and throw a party featuring classic music videos, old-school MTV games (such as Remote Control and MTV Celebrity Photo booth), MTV-themed cocktails (highlights include the Martha Quinn and Tonic and the Long Island Iced TRL), and custom-made Pin the Sunglasses on Robin Thicke game and Justin Bieber dart board! Now we’re talking!

#4: Greenpointers Comedy Night (SUN 8pm, $5)

Our fellow neighborhood blog Greenpointers couldn’t care less about the VMAs. They are inviting everyone to Greenpoint to check out talented comedians Anthony Devito, Michelle Wolf, George Gordon & Jeremy Parker, hosted by Tom Cowell. Take a free cab, no excuses!

#5 Damn Everything But the Circus @ Pumps (SUN 7PM, $12)

If you’re reading our art section, you already know that another art show is coming up at Brooklyn’s fave strip club, Pumps. Yes, artist Aubrey Rommer did it again: she curated a show of fluorescent art, invited burlesque dancers and set up a lot of performance art. This all comes in an elegant Pumps packaging. Why? Because that’s how Bushwick does it!
