The Janitor

He mops and sweeps the floor and the time passes. His thoughts are initially for getting through the morning.
Classroom 1A is empty so he goes in there and starts stacking chairs on top of the tables. They tell the students to do this job. After class, the teachers stand up front and tell the students to put their chairs on top of their tables. It’s a year where spring lasts three days and then moves on, overcrowded by zealous winter and threatening summer. Having too many options is one of the best things about living in New York City. We are constantly being pulled to this show and that cafe or to that gallery or this park. Sometimes our options feel limitless…but they’re not! When it comes down to it, you need to make a decision! Luckily the events we picked out allow you some flexibility. For one, they’re spread out over three days and they’re all local, which sort of allows you to bar hop. One of the events is all day so you can pop in and out! It doesn’t matter which show you go to, just go to one!

8. Shark? / The Woolen Men / Lame Drivers / Hippy @ Shea Stadium (Sunday, 8PM, $8)
Brooklyn favorites, Shark? headline this 4 set show at Shea this Sunday. Rock out to some garage-rock and post-punk.

The hunt for a good brunch spot gets a bit more eclectic the further you travel into Brooklyn - the varying cuisines of the surrounding population is often reflected in each spot putting their own special cultural spin on this popular meal. Whether that means eggs at a popular Mexican spot or a Filipino-American version of waffles, you’re sure to find something new to taste when you venture one stop further on our “trusty” L train.
#1: Heavy Woods

A recently opened spot from the owners of The Bodega, Heavy Woods mixes its rustic vibe with a coffee shop attitude, opening up early to let sleepy-eyed locals slowly filter in each morning for strong caffeinated beverages (Cafe Grumpy) and pastries from Ceci-Cela to help get through the day. At night, the bar turns into a drinker’s paradise with 14 craft beers on tap and a large selection of whiskeys, mezcals, and tequilas. On weekends, brunch comes… Read More

There is a steady hum that has begun to permeate the streets of Bushwick. What is this noise, you say? It is the rhythm and the life of Bushwick, which is literally bursting at the seams with creative energy and vibrancy. While the New York art world is still catching its breath from last week’s Frieze Art Festival on Randall’s Island, Bushwick continues its stride, bringing new and exciting arts events each and every weekend. We at Bushwick Daily aren’t going to let you miss a single beat! Make sure to check out these art events happening in this weekend!

BUSHWICK SAYS… is back. I document lives of Bushwick residents and strangers through random pictures, quotes, stories, and anecdotes. This week I met an irked artist, a Nerf Gun enthusiast, and an old man singing Uncle Kracker.
I wish I had things to express on this page—but I don’t. It’s not a reflection on you at all by any means. But sometimes I feel dead inside.

“I like to play this game with my friends called ‘ Destructible.’ Basically, one person draws a picture, and then the next person draws something to destroy the previous drawing, and then another person draws a picture to destroy that…”
“A gruesome exquisite corpse?”
“Kinda. It’s funny. In coffee shops, people draw no problem. But when I did this in art school and people…they couldn’t draw anything because…”
Slams fist on the table.
“Dammit, it all had to be perfect.”
The idea of “perfection” generally brings me to a philosophical rant about subjectivity, which… Read More

CocoRosie decided to introduce Brooklyn to their newest album through a ceremonial concert at The Paper Box last weekend. The one-off was their only US show before a slew of European dates. The performance was as mystical as the Eleusinian mysteries with CocoRosie as a duo of Demetra’s priestesses initiating us to the sounds of their new album, Tales of a Grass Widow. The album will be available to stream on the NY Times website next week, and their sold out concert was unforgettable. We all know that Bushwick is a center of art and culture, but to be gifted with a rare performance from outstanding and world-renowned artists as CocoRosie came as a surprise. What came as even more of a shock was that Cocorosie specifically chose the venue in East Williamsburg.
