I Am A Negress of Noteworthy Talent will feature five short films whose topics range from African astronauts in Zambia to black women vampires. The common thread? All were created by emerging black women filmmakers, a demographic greatly underrepresented in the film world. When I asked lead organizer Wendy James why the focus is on black women filmmakers, she explained: “I feel like our voices are powerful and they can deconstruct our society…racial identity really influences our perspective and it creates a unique perspective.” Wendy feels that this event is about making a strong statement in a society where “there’s an effort to silence black women.”

On Thursday night at Brooklyn Fire Proof, you can see films by five different filmmakers that range from narrative to documentary to experimental. Suicide By Sunlight by Nikyatu Jusu consists of a dangerous breed of Day-Walking Black Vampires protected by added melanin who roam New York City.… Read More

Make sure you make your way out to Silent Barn next Wednesday because the creative house is hosting public meeting #8, and they will be talking about women in DIY.

The panel will start at 9PM and will feature four wonderful and inspiring panelists: Sara Marcus (author of Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution), Sari Rubinstein (organizer of the epic underground parties called RUBULAD), Rachel Nelson (of Secret Project Robot and her new gallery/venue Happyfun Hideaway), and Nina Mashurova (of Silent Barn).
The panel will be followed by Q&A, and music (Habibi, Girl Toy, Advaeta, DJ SET by Katie Rose). The admission is $7 and, despite the all female staffing, boys and men are also welcome!

Bushwick Open Studios is happening again this year and it feels even more real with the directory of 569 registrants which just went live! You can browse this historically highest number of the registered shows (551 in 2012) as long as you want to, check out your listings, the listings of your friends, conspire, plan, and start getting really excited!!!
In case you just realized you want to take part in Bushwick Open Studios, you should read the guidelines before you register. At this point your listing will appear only online, not in the printed directory but it’s still well worth it!

Natalie (All Photos by Renee Ligtvoet for Bushwick Daily)

Spring is in full bloom and the residents of Bushwick are taking note. The sweaters are gone, the dresses are on, and spirits are high. We spoke to a number of our fashionable Bushwick neighbors to get their take on spring styles.

Natalie (photo above) walks the streets of Bushwick with the natural poise of a woman who is comfortable in her own skin. She shines in a spring dress that contains splashes of color suggesting the stained glass of a cathedral. Pairing her dress with bright red lipstick, Natalie tells us her outfit is suitable for work as much as it is for play. She is a dominatrix going on four years and she professionally refuses to divulge any of her clients most thrilling fetishes. When asked about her favorite article of clothing, Natalie quickly knows the answer. She’s owned a little red riding hood jacket since she was a young girl and,… Read More

In the next few days, you might encounter a piece of paper taped to a wall with the inscription “Take me, free piece of art inside” somewhere around Bushwick. Well, you should take it. Inside is artwork by Alex Trema, a French street artist who is in town for a few days.

When booking his trip to New York, he realized that he could not fly back to Paris without leaving some of his art behind and decided to hang 24 pieces around the five boroughs for people to take in subways, on factory walls, and in other unusual places. Once people find them, they will be asked to take a picture with the piece and send it to his email address or post it on his Facebook page. Behind the project is this idea of “creating a link,” as Alex Trema describes it. He wants people to be “curious” about them.

It was bitter sweet to hear that Deborah Brown will be closing the little space on Wilson Avenue that has been a home to Storefront Bushwick for over three years. The gallery is, without a doubt, a staple in artsy Bushwick. It has become so popular that its openings have been so packed that the crowd would pour out from the space to the street, resembling a neighborhood block party. Long story short: The party is moving to 324 Ten Eyck because Deborah Brown just bought a huge building and has announced her epic plans for Storefront Ten Eyck - and gave us a tour!

“I hope that people will come here,” said Deborah Brown humbly as she opened the heavy iron door of her new building. The sun was setting and Ten Eyck was bathed in yellow light. Kings County, a small, dark dive bar on Seigel and Bogart, is organizing a rather unusual event - New York’s Smallest Penis Contest. Bar manager Aimee Arciuolo told the Post that “the small guy needs to be celebrated” because those guys have to work harder. The contest is planned for July 20, and here is how it will look…

“The event is part beauty pageant and part wet-skivvies contest — with a talent show, musical numbers and question-and-answer session,” writes the Post. The competitors will also show themselves off in skin-tight evening wear and swimsuit rounds. The winner will get $200 and a crown.
If you’re asking yourself who on Earth would ever sign up for a competition like this…well, honestly we don’t know. But apparently three contestants have already signed up.
So guys, I’m a little torn here. Is it a good or bad thing to have a contest… Read More

Twin Sister has been making waves around Brooklyn for some time, but caught our ears when their debut LP, In Heaven, popped up on best of 2011 lists. Ever since, we’ve been crushing hard on their sound, an eclectic blend of dance-rock grooves, twangy guitars and dreamy synths that swirl around the quirky, shape-shifting voice of singer Andrea Estella. Although the album generated lots of positive attention, the band remains rather elusive, especially for an age in which it’s not unusual to see what a band ate for lunch on Instagram. They kicked off a mini spring tour at Bushwick’s very own Silent Barn the night of Saturday the 11th, so naturally we jumped at the chance to catch a glimpse of this mysterious band and finally see them perform live.

My own personal favorite Twin Sister song is “Stop,” and it’s a good primer on how they… Read More
