The hunt for a good brunch spot gets a bit more eclectic the further you travel into Brooklyn - the varying cuisines of the surrounding population is often reflected in each spot putting their own special cultural spin on this popular meal. Whether that means eggs at a popular Mexican spot or a Filipino-American version of waffles, you’re sure to find something new to taste when you venture one stop further on our “trusty” L train.
#1: Heavy Woods

A recently opened spot from the owners of The Bodega, Heavy Woods mixes its rustic vibe with a coffee shop attitude, opening up early to let sleepy-eyed locals slowly filter in each morning for strong caffeinated beverages (Cafe Grumpy) and pastries from Ceci-Cela to help get through the day. At night, the bar turns into a drinker’s paradise with 14 craft beers on tap and a large selection of whiskeys, mezcals, and tequilas. On weekends, brunch comes… Read More

I don’t know about you, but now that it’s getting warm out I’ve been craving some catfish. And if it’s been caramelized in a clay pot by a refreshingly friendly man from Chaozhou, well, that’s sublime. Now I can finally get my clay pot catfish fix at Falansai, a French–Vietnamese restaurant that just opened in Morgantown. Only two weeks into operation, but the owner, Henry Trieu, has already crafted a relaxed, beach-y atmosphere with bright mint walls and wide windows and bird cages hanging from the ceiling.

Chaouzou is a region of Canton, but the language, culture, and cuisine is quite distinct from Cantonese. But their food is very influential to Thai, Vietnamese and Mayalsian cuisine. One stop further into Bushwick and the brunch spots keep getting better, thanks to neighborhood staples like Northeast Kingdom. An even better omen for the cuisine off the Jefferson stop is influx of new spots opening up and new menus debuting at your old standbys. Start your weekend right by checking out five more spots willing to satisfy your brunch fix!

#1: Mazelle: New rockstar chef will make it worth-while

Coming up on their one-year anniversary, the owners of Mazelle decided to make sure things their relationship with Bushwick stays fresh by importing a new “rock star” of a chef straight from San Francisco to liven up their already delicious food. The result: A new brunch menu full of fresh, organic ingredients and house-made, Russian-influenced specialties. The space used to be a burrito joint, but Yury, the owner, transformed it from those humble origins into Mazelle’s farmhouse-meets-factory aesthetic, adding intricately tiled floors,… Read More

Bunna Cafe has become a staple in Brooklyn’s pop-up food shop trend, bringing their mouth-watering Ethiopian food to bars and fairs in Bushwick and beyond. You may have seen them dolling out the Injera (Ethipian spongy sourdough bread) at the Bushwick Block Party last summer, rocking it at the BK Night Bazaar this winter, or as the busiest booth at Pine Box’s Vegan Pop Up shops every second Saturday of the month. If you haven’t been able to catch up with this ambitious on-the-go restaurant yet, your opportunities are becoming more numerous. Bunna now does monthly dinner parties and cooking classes and are throwing very special event this Saturday! Read on to learn about how their business embraces Ethiopian culture and how they are spreading the love here in Brooklyn.

Yes, we all know that Morgan is the stop for the game-changing and Girls-approved brunch at Roberta’s, but what happens when the line is too long and they run out of sticky buns? Luckily, there are a number of other delicious brunch spots nearby that let you have your organic, humanely farmed eggs and eat them, too. Here’s the rundown on four taste bud-pleasing options.

#1: Tutu’s: Cider doughnuts, goat cheese and kale omelet
All photos by Arielle Sachar for Bushwick Daily
After hitting up one of Tutu’s late-night dance basement parties, the only remedy to next morning’s hangover is their country style brunch. The semi-recently opened spot (but what’s really “recently” in ever-changing Bushwick?) makes you feel like you’re dining in your grandma’s farmhouse, an apt vibe considering it’s named after one of the owner’s grandmothers (“tutu” is Hawaiian for grandmother). With knickknacks decorating the bar and a wall of antique portraits of… Read More

As New Yorkers, we can often feel like we’ve cornered the market on brunch – although other cities may think the veracity of that statement is up for debate. Adding strength to our argument for brunch superiority is the new (and somewhat old) crop of Bushwick brunch spots serving up a varied mix of meals to get you through a (hungover) weekend morning. So, let’s hop back on the train and explore how our neighborhood interprets the cherished NYC institution known as brunch. First stop: Montrose.

#1 Tradesman: Truffle Deviled Eggs will keep you coming back

Recognizing that the area around the Montrose stop lacks many sit-down brunch spots, the Tradesman started serving brunch a few months back, courtesy of chef Brian Nicholas. Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the dishes at this rustic, neighborhood bar are made sustainably, featuring farmer’s market veggies, Berkshire pork sausage, and cage-free Amish eggs. Fresh off talks of Bushwick’s gentrification and ice cream, let’s dive into something equally as sweet: chocolate. In the heart of Morgantown lies a factory where chocolate is imagined, packaged and then devoured with smiles of pure bliss. We visited Fine & Raw where Daniel Sklaar, a chocolatier and the owner of this buzzing locale, took me on a tour to see the inner workings of his delectable factory.

The secret to Fine & Raw’s outstanding flavors and melt-in-your-mouth textures is in the heat. Upon entry, you’ll pass 150 pound burlap sacks filled with cacao beans from places like Bolivia, Colombia, Ghana and Madagascar. The beans go through a work-intensive process, produced on site, which includes sorting, searing, grinding, dehydrating, liquifying and packaging. But it’s not that simple. I learned that to… Read More

It looks like spring may have finally arrived in New York and it’s just in time because Bushwick is about to get its very first ice cream shop! Evergreen Ice Cream Co. will open its doors on April 27, 2013 but we were invited to check out the pre-launch party on Saturday and got a chance to sneak a peek at the venue, discuss the new shop with owner Cisco Garcia and, of course, eat free ice cream!
Party-goers enjoy free ice cream.
Owner Cisco Garcia serves up a scoop!
Garcia is only 23 years old and, while an ice cream parlor in Bushwick may seem like just another symbol of gentrification, this shop is unique. Tucked away on a quiet corner on Evergreen Ave, the aptly named Evergreen Ice Cream Co. still bears a sign that reads “Evergreen Deli Grocery,” a reminder of… Read More
