(Courtesy Bushwick Art Crit Group) This past March, Bushwick Art Crit Group had its inaugural meeting led by local artist and organizer Christopher Stout in the gallery of Brooklyn Fire Proof East. On Wednesday, May 16, the gallery was again filled with artists and art lovers for a unique event within the Crit Group. 16 artists had 3 minutes each to introduce the audience to their work and what they will be showing during Bushwick Open Studios, followed by a 3 minute Q&A per artist. But as we all know, Bushwick never sleeps and never takes a break from art happenings. Here’s a handful of creative events happening in the next couple of days… 1. VCU Recent MFA Alumni @ 299 Meserole (Friday, 6-9PM) Despite the rain water flooding parts of the promising new art building on 299 Meserole and hindering its big BOS launch, some of the festivities are happening this Friday! Image by Wendy Pope I Am A Negress of Noteworthy Talent will feature five short films whose topics range from African astronauts in Zambia to black women vampires. The common thread? All were created by emerging black women filmmakers, a demographic greatly underrepresented in the film world. When I asked lead organizer Wendy James why the focus is on black women filmmakers, she explained: “I feel like our voices are powerful and they can deconstruct our society…racial identity really influences our perspective and it creates a unique perspective.” Wendy feels that this event is about making a strong statement in a society where “there’s an effort to silence black women.” On Thursday night at Brooklyn Fire Proof, you can see films by five different filmmakers that range from narrative to documentary to experimental. Make sure you make your way out to Silent Barn next Wednesday because the creative house is hosting public meeting #8, and they will be talking about women in DIY.   The panel will start at 9PM and will feature four wonderful and inspiring panelists: Sara Marcus (author of Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution), Sari Rubinstein (organizer of the epic underground parties called RUBULAD), Rachel Nelson (of Secret Project Robot and her new gallery/venue Happyfun Hideaway), and Nina Mashurova (of Silent Barn). The panel will be followed by Q&A, and music (Habibi, Girl Toy, Advaeta, DJ SET by Katie Rose). In the next few days, you might encounter a piece of paper taped to a wall with the inscription “Take me, free piece of art inside” somewhere around Bushwick. Well, you should take it. Inside is artwork by Alex Trema, a French street artist who is in town for a few days. When booking his trip to New York, he realized that he could not fly back to Paris without leaving some of his art behind and decided to hang 24 pieces around the five boroughs for people to take in subways, on factory walls, and in other unusual places. Once people find them, they will be asked to take a picture with the piece and send it to his email address or post it on his Facebook page. New home of the numerous activities of Deborah Brown (all photos by Katarina Hybenova for Bushwick Daily) It was bitter sweet to hear that Deborah Brown will be closing the little space on Wilson Avenue that has been a home to Storefront Bushwick for over three years. The gallery is, without a doubt, a staple in artsy Bushwick. It has become so popular that its openings have been so packed that the crowd would pour out from the space to the street, resembling a neighborhood block party. Performances by local Bushwick kids are a rare thing for BOS, as the festival largely consists of Bushwick implants, experimental and established artists. During a hectic weekend of art shows, installations and crowded streets, be sure to stop by Maria Hernandez Park on Sunday, June 2nd and watch the real kids of Bushwick do their thang.
