Starting this coming Monday, The Johnsons Bushwick will have a monthly party that’s cheekily called Taking Back Monday. This recurring event’s purpose? Celebrating the emo, pop-punk, and post-hardcore tunes of millennial’s youths. Did you grow up on Brand New, At The Drive-in, Lifetime, Against Me, Jawbreaker, Thursday, and everything in between? Come reminisce!

On the first Monday of every month, you can channel your inner emo kid—the one who thrived off of teenage angst in the early 2000s.

Think of it as a version of the ever-popular Emo Night Brooklyn, except way more lowkey, with barstools and dope food from Strange Flavor, the burger shack in the front of the bar (vegan options available!)

Organizers and bartenders Nick Mastorakis and Chelsea Popp elaborate on what the event means to them and why they decided to create it in the first place.

“Every time I put on [this music] at the bar I see people get excited to hear a piece of who they were 10 or 15 years ago. It makes me happy to realize that being part of a music scene connects me to so many people that I didn’t even realize I had that connection with,” says Mastorakis.

“It’s cool to be nostalgic once a month!”, Popp adds.

We all know Bushwick is filled with people who long for a simpler time when this music was the soundtrack to their lives. Taking Back Monday at The Johnsons will bring you back there!

Come through, drink some beers, grab a Strange Flavor burger, and sing along—you know you remember all the lyrics.
