Your Most Magical October To Do List (aka Pumpkins Everywhere)!
The most magical and atmospheric of the months is October
The most magical and atmospheric of the months is October. The leaves turn yellow and red, and they go shhhhh on the trees as you walk through Maria Hernandez Park. It is the perfect month for culture as events are thriving, and for food and drink as everything taste like pumpkin. So let's immerse ourselves in this beautiful month, and let's see what's on our October To Do List!
#1 Stalk Banksy
October has been officially hijacked by Banksy who claimed it the month of his residency in the streets of New York, and has been surprising us every morning with a new piece, causing hundreds of New Yorkers to commute to various parts of the city only to take a picture of the newest Banksy before it gets buffed. Banksy also visited Bushwick and East Williamsburg, and as his pieces are no more, we hope to see more of him before the month ends.
#2 Be all Sexy-Scary for Halloween
October is the month of Halloween, and we hope you have a sexy-scary costume ready because you will need one for this awesome warehouse party crafted by our beloved party collective, BangOn!NYC. A Halloween party titled Warehouse of Horrors is going down on Saturday October 26 in a 40,000 square foot multi-room warehouse facility off the Montrose L train. Tix start at $35.
#3 Vacation Variety
A Bushwick variety show is the modern day talent show. Cozy up in the back room of Pinebox Rock Shop with very serious comedians, a post-post-post-post modern dance troupe, and DJ Barons of the Sea. Stick around for the twerk contest afterwards and win a $100 cash prize. Booty poppin' all the way to Halloween, yo. Friday, October 18 at 9PM.
#4 CMJ Madness
College Music Journal is doing it again this year! If you're a music freak - just like us at Bushwick Daily - you know what it means: little to no sleep and tons of new awesome bands to discover throughout the city! Bushwick Daily is part of this madness this year as well and will be throwing The Bushwick Unofficial CMJ Showcase on Thursday Oct 17 at Bizarre. We put together an exclusively Bushwick showcase with The Sky Report and Supercrush Studios, which features a solid lineup of Brooklyn bands, including Psychic Twin, Andre Obin, Nicholas Nicholas, Foxes In Fiction, and Orange Gold Red, and more TBD. If you want to participate in CMJ while staying local, this night will be full of debauchery.
#5 Beat Nite is Back
Of course October will be artsy fartsy, Bushwick! Norte Maar is organizing their Beat Nite #9, this time with galleries and art spaces curated by James Panero, who is the executive editor of New Criterion and a Bushwick aficionado. Get ready for Friday, October 25, 6-10PM.
#6 Pumpkin and Nothing but Pumpkinfest
Bushwick Farmer's Market is organizing Calabaza Fest on Sunday, October 27. It is a free, cross-cultural community event celebrating Day of the Dead, Halloween and Eco-Harvest Fair traditions, with live music, performers, pumpkin carving, mask making, and other stuff...all at Maria Hernandez Park!
#7 Pumpkin Ale
Scientific studies show that pumpkin consumed in the liquid stage is the healthiest! Okay, we totally made this up but you should know that Three Diamond Door bar has an amazing Pumpkin Ale for $6 with sweet cinnamon on the edge of the glass. That's hard to beat, dear friends!
#8 Raw Art Showcase
Rawartists are coming to Brooklyn! Watch 40 Brooklyn artists compete for sweet prices on October 20th, 6-10PM. Tix are $15 in presale, $20 at the door! Fashionable attire requested!
#9 56 Bogart Does Have Cool Art Indeed
If you're hoping to see some really good art this month, go see Richard Garrison at Robert Henry Contemporary and Meg Hitchcock at Studio 10. Both open this Friday, October 11 at 7PM at 56 Bogart building.
#10 Fall in Love with Photography Again
Get inspired by photography once again. The autumn light is perfect for long photo-walks and your personal projects finally coming true. A mandatory dose of inspiration plus some words of wisdom from our well-established peers will be provided by our original web series Bushwick Lens sponsored by CSI Rentals.
#11 Get Good Local Reads
Bushwick's favorite writer (and reader), Paul Rome is celebrating the release of his debut novel, We All Sleep in the Same Room on October 18 at Bat Haus. Craft beers will be provided by Brooklyn Brewery; wine by Northeast Kingdom; a toast by Cafe Ghia and an all-vinyl set by DJ La Darryl and Jacp Mirren of O Paradiso!
#12 Get Spooky in Ridgewood
Ridgewood is kinda the perfect October neighborhood. Tree-lined streets, lights in the windows, old fashioned shops and bars. Ridgewood Social is inviting you to join them for a Ridgewood Spooky Bar Crawl that will explore our northern neighbor's bar scene on Saturday, October 18 at 8PM.
#13 Get on a Sweet Pumpkin Diet
They get our October obsession with pumpkins over at Dun-Well Doughnuts on Montrose Ave. They're offering lotsa sweet pumpkin stuff from Pumpkin Spice Cake with Cinnamon Cream Cheese Icing to Pumpkin Crunch Doughnut. Everything is vegan! Everything is dangerously good!
#14 Eat October Brunch
Farmer's Almanac is calling for a harsh winter this year, but you can warm up on chilly weekend mornings with some soft, hot, fluffy, buttery, melty sourdough pancakes from The Narrows's brunch menu. The pancakes are topped with pumpkin seeds and peach jam, making them the perfect sweet and fruity treat to cure a halloween party hangover!
