Here Are Some Health and Lifestyle Trends in Bushwick, According to Our Survey

You might be surprised.

Evan Haddad

Last week, we asked our readers to tell us about some of their lifestyle habits.

We wanted to know if you went to a gym or thought Bushwick was a food desert. We asked what we'd see in your little red basket at the grocery store, and what you'd like to see changed in the neighborhood.

The 126 replies to our survey told us many interesting things. While that number is far less than we would have liked, it suggests some general trends that are surely applicable to the health and fitness lives of many Bushwickers.

Have a look at some of the interesting numbers and testimonies below.

These were the unhealthiest things people have done or eaten recently:

- fried chicken wings

- drank every day for the past 2 months

- wings and pizza for lunch then burger and milkshake for dinner

- cheeseburgers at various Bushwick establishments each day for a week

- Artichoke — the pizza, not the vegetable

Here are some things you'll in a reader's grocery basket:

- Vegetables, ground turkey/chicken, oatmeal, almond milk, peanut butter

- Tortillas, jalapeños, beans, cheese

- Cheese, frozen pizza, beer

- Eggs, kale, hummus & pita, chicken broth, fresh dills

- Beet juice, a banana, popcorn and beer

Here's where our respondents exercise the most in order of popularity:

- Blink Fitness

- Crunch Fitness

- Planet Fitness

- Daya yoga

- At home

Here are changes related to health and lifestyle that people would like to see:

"In general, would like to see classes/experiences be more affordable and accessible to all demographics."

"Better/cheaper produce sections in SOUTH Bushwick. North Bushwick does better in this regard."

"More healthy & affordable restaurants and place to eat lunch, and let's not pretend that an average hipster restaurant makes actually healthy food."

"Less food trash on the sidewalks."

"More neighbor fitness classes besides yoga/Pilates."

"WE NEED HEALTHIER FOOD OPTIONS!! We desperately need more grocery stores, especially before these giant new apartment buildings open in the next year"

"I think the neighborhood has many options to support a healthy lifestyle, but the issue is getting residents to utilize them."
