Before “affordable housing” became a politically charged buzzword, it must have once seemed like a laughable redundancy. However, it’s 2016 and and we are in the 7th coolest neighborhood in the world or something, and chances are your landlord would like several thousand dollars a month in exchange for the use of your apartment.

Given this state of affairs, it will interest locals to know that Brooklyn Unidos, a project sponsored by the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council, will be hosting a presentation by a group of scholars in the Parsons Graduate Program in Design and Urban Ecologies at the RBSCC Youth Center tonight as they present their recently published gazette entitled “A Right to Housing!” that focuses on—you guessed it—our very own neighborhood.

The gazette presents lots of useful information about housing in the neighborhood, including but not limited to “the history of Bushwick, past trends, current trends, demographics and other data, maps, zoning, affordable housing and gentrification” and the goal of the project is “to educate the public on how to advocate for and protect affordable housing in our community.”

The event will include ample opportunity for discussion of the Gazette in both English and Spanish, and starts at 7pm; free copies of the gazette will be available to the public. The RBSCC Youth Center is located at 1474 Gates Avenue between Irving Ave and Knickerbocker Ave, off of the Myrtle-Wyckoff Ave stop on the M train and the L train.
