Because it’s the thick of summer and because Bushwick rarely sleeps, we’ve got yet another free event to share with our readers. This time, it’s an all-day bonanza featuring free food and performances at Maria Hernandez Park this Sunday from 3 to 10 p.m.
The main performance is called “Ghetto Hors D’oeuvres: Climate.” Directed by Modesto ‘Flako’ Jimenez, Bushwick’s own theater, poetry, and performance mastermind, the 8 p.m. show is a series of poetic theatrical performances that “tell of the city’s transformation, celebrating the changes and addressing the inequalities while together [rejoicing] in the ups and downs of el Barrio.”
Before the performance, you’ll be able to sample free food from Tony’s Pizzeria, Brooklyn Whiskers, Brooklyn Limbers, and Pastelitos Elvys. There will also be free musical performances starting at 3 p.m. from DJ jojoSOUL, El Puente students, Adam Lomeo & Nina Roefaro Lomeo, and Well Dressed Villains.
Some of our favorite additional activities and events include a table where you can compose and send postcards to your representatives in government about issues that are important to you, a t-shirt making station, and a weeds station where you’ll learn about the plants nobody wants and how they will one day power our future.
The whole day of festivities is brought to you by The Bushwick Starr and Oye Group as part of the Mayor’s Office of Media & Entertainment’s series, Off Broadway in the Boros, and while this isn’t the first “Ghetto Hors D’oeuvres” performance, it’s the first one at the park, and it’s sure to be a blast!
