If you’re an intersectional feminist, chances are you take Women’s History Month very seriously. One possible approach: listen to a lil Beyoncé and celebrate all the women out there who have fought for women’s rights and who continue to have their voices heard in the media.

But of course, one of the most inspiring ways to smash the patriarchy during WHM is to learn about women in the arts whose work shattered both glass ceilings and widely held misconceptions about feminine gendered experience.

If you’d like to get in on that kind of fun, check out this nifty guide to events presenting awesome lady-powered works of art, from female-directed movies at our darling movie theater, Syndicated, to live performances from contemporary female artists at The Living Gallery.

1.) Drink up with your gal pals and watch some cool chick flicks at Syndicated

Syndicated Theater Wide 2 lo by Michael Tulipan

Starting March 21st, Syndicated will be showing a different female-directed film every day though the end of the month. For two weeks, feminists and their allies can sit back, relax with one of the house’s Bacon-Butter Meatballs in hand and watch classic women positive films such as A League of Their Own or catch a Sofia Coppola double feature of two of her finest films: Lost In Translation and The Virgin Suicides.

A few more highlights: On March 28th you’ll be able to see Mary Harron’s film adaptation of American Psycho, a picturesque representation of 1980s yuppie culture with Christian Bale portraying the Wall Street-serial killer-bro, Patrick Bateman. And if you’re “totally buggin” because of work and won’t be able to catch any of the movies until March 31st, then check out Syndicated’s closing film of the series: Clueless by Amy Heckerling. As if we’re gonna miss this one!

Best part of this gal fest? Tickets for a single film are a wage gap friendly $3, and $5 for double features. Here’s to you, lady auteurs!

Syndicated is located at 40 Bogart Street off of the Morgan Ave. stop on the L train. It’s open M-F 5pm-12am, Sat 11am-2am, and Sun 11am-12am. Check out their film calendar for the different films.

Art made by women ranks among some of the most incredible goddamn art in the world. If you want to know what it’s like to be a successful female artist in a male-dominated art world, stop by the DeKalb branch of the Brooklyn Public Library (on Bushwick Ave at Dekalb) on March 22nd for a panel on the experience of being a woman artist.

Some of the inspiring panelists include lifelong Bushwick resident and Latina photographer Danielle DeJesus and long time Bushwick documentary photographer, Meryl Meisler. This panel of talented, impassioned, hard working ladies will definitely inspire and impress you!

This event is FREE and open to the public, so head to the library straight after work! You might even check out an art book on your way out.

Graphic Women: A Women’s Panel Discussion at The BK Public Library is on Tuesday, March 22nd, from 6pm-8pm. The event will take place at the DeKalb Library located at 790 Bushwick Avenue off of the Kosciuszko St. stop on the J train.

So you wanna expand your cultural side, but you’re intimidated by the expansive, overwhelming art scene. That’s fine! Take baby steps by walking around Bushwick and checking out all the local galleries (cause everyone’s nicer here than those Lower East Side snobs), and be sure to stop by The Living Gallery on your way home on Thursday, March 24th, for the space’s nod to Women’s History Month. Entitled “Punctured,” the show is a variety of pottery, photography, and cool performance art—and naturally, every single one of the the boss 14 artists featured in the show is female identifying!

“Punctured” starts at 7pm, with performances at 9pm. You never know—you might get inspired to start making some badass art on your own.

“Punctured” will take place on Thursday, March 24th, from 7pm-11pm. The event will ve held at The Living Gallery, located at 1094 Broadway off of the Kosciuszko St. stop on the J train.

Get out there and celebrate the rest of Women’s History Month in Bushwick by letting these lady-centric events fill your heart with confidence!
