1990

Do you ever get caught up in Buzzfeed lists of 90’s nostalgia or ’25 Ways to Tell You’re a Kid of the 90’s’? Still seems like the 90’s were just yesterday – or if you were born in the 90’s, you missed (most of) it! Speaking of nostalgia and great things passed, it still feels like

#1 “CONFINE” @ CHASM (FRI 7-9 pm)

56 Bogart Street

CHASM_Confine_Art opening

Maximalism meets minimalism in CHASM’s “CONFINE,” a collaborative two-artist exhibition of the whimsical illustrations of Karan Singh and the photography of Ward Roberts. Their hyper-optical spatial abstractions collide to draw on themes of loneliness and isolation in contemporary life. Karan’s work embodies a form of animated visual overload, Ward captures the minimalist beauty and pathos of abandoned sports courts as they serve as precursors to stadium spectacles. In both forms of landscape, an underlying meaning and innate energy are meant to be sensed among the shifting compositions.

#2 “CONTROL PANEL” @ Honey Ramka (FRI 6-9 pm)

56 Bogart Street

Honey Ramka_Control Panel_The Electrician

Channeling a machine aesthetic, the formal works of “Control Panel” set the stage for an “anxious chamber quickened by patterns, programs, and other visual/aural tics, rhythms, and effects.” Iterations of technological types, processes and modes will be presented by arists James Clark, Linda Francis, Micah Ganske, Ben Garthus, Tom Moody and Yael Rechter. Honey Ramka will also present drawings from the in-progress graphic novel ‘The Electrician,’ by Salman Toor. Filling the project space with the strangeness of the supernatural, highlights themes and social conflicts of contemporary Pakistani life.

#3 “Sky’s The Limit” @ 99¢ Plus Gallery (FRI 7-10 pm)

238 Wilson Avenue

“The Sky’s The Limit” opens Friday, June 19th (Image courtesy of 99 Cent Plus Gallery)

Sacha Vega pairs landscape photographs and awards objects for “Sky’s The Limit” this Friday at 99¢ Plus Gallery. In a sculptural intervention to encourage the viewers’ physical interaction, Vega draws ideas from the tropes of motivational language (i.e. “the sky’s the limit”), creating puns with the nature imagery embedded within the language. The back and forth between the photographs of awards and staged settings encourages viewers to answer for themselves who the authority on value, taste and praise are when it comes to one’s work.
