Get ready for Open House New York  (OHNY) taking place this weekend on October 11th and 12th. If you’re not familiar with this event, OHNY is all about exclusive access to great architectural sites throughout New York City, many of which you can only visit during OHNY weekend.

Sites like the Jefferson Market Library and The United Nations conduct special tours, and The TWA Flight Center at JFK is only open at this time of year. You can step inside Edward Hopper’s studio in Greenwich Village, or visit the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage where the author spent the last years of his life in The Bronx. If you make it south of Lower Manhattan, OHNY lets you climb upon Battery Weed, a military installation at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. Even private residences open to the public during OHNY, all offering an intimate glimpse into historical locations and key developments occurring across the five boroughs.

Visit TroutHouse at 225 Troutman Street during Open House New York weekend

A private residence that also operates as an architectural firm will be open in Bushwick—you may have walked past this captivating modern building on Troutman Street between Knickerbocker and Wilson Avenues before. TroutHouse, at 225 Troutman Street will be open on Saturday, October 11th from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm, with tours at 11 am and 1 pm. We recommended a visit to TroutHouse during Bushwick Open Studios 2014 and featured this multifamily building in our round-up of new builds in Bushwick since 2009. Contributing to Bushwick’s urban transformation, this sustainable green structure was completed in 2012 and first participated in OHNY in 2013.

According to the listing in the OHNY guide,

This Energy Star rated live/work building has been awarded LEED for Homes Gold and features a 5kW solar array, rain water harvesting system, and other sustainable features.”

If you visit during OHNY weekend (which I recommend you do), you’ll see this live-work space in action, and catch 360 degree rooftop views from the energy efficient rooftop and garden. Cutting edge rain water conservation features include a grey water retention system that helps with irrigation throughout the rooftop and building. TroutHouse also houses the offices of The Thread Collective, a kick-ass architecture and design firm all about sustainable, green design with projects from residential to new construction from the ground up.
