It’s hard to keep up with the sheer amount of music that’s being put out these days, especially in New York. Brooklyn is one of the cities most densely packed with musical talent in all the world. Why does such great music come from here? Let’s attribute it to the fluoride tap water. Oh, and maybe a bit to our personal ambition. Here are five great new singles from bands around the ‘hood, including The Vandelles, Turnip King, The So So Glos, Surfing, and The Teen Age.

Bunna Cafe has become a staple in Brooklyn’s pop-up food shop trend, bringing their mouth-watering Ethiopian food to bars and fairs in Bushwick and beyond. You may have seen them dolling out the Injera (Ethipian spongy sourdough bread) at the Bushwick Block Party last summer, rocking it at the BK Night Bazaar this winter, or as the busiest booth at Pine Box’s Vegan Pop Up shops every second Saturday of the month. If you haven’t been able to catch up with this ambitious on-the-go restaurant yet, your opportunities are becoming more numerous. Bunna now does monthly dinner parties and cooking classes and are throwing very special event this Saturday! Read on to learn about how their business embraces Ethiopian culture and how they are spreading the love here in Brooklyn.

Our dear little Pigeon town (or the land just east of it) is about to receive a massive treat: Cocorosie! The freak-folk musical sensation, who have garnished high praise throughout the past 10 years, are playing a rare one-off show at The PaperBox on May 10 as their only North American date before they embark on a long European tour.

Bushwick is known for its epic “Girls-revered” party scene, so it’s not a surprise that a 420-friendly shop has made its way into the neighborhood. Nestled on the corner of Wilson and Melrose (near to some of our neighborhood faves Storefront Gallery and Bushwick Coffee House) a new smoke shop, Sunflower Glass Company, has made a home. The shop is spacious, clean, well-decorated, and houses a gallery of gorgeous smoking accessories, jewelery, clothing and other goodies.

Recording Studio The Fort Brooklyn is Throwing a Black Tie Rock’n'Roll Benefit

by | 4.17.13 | 0 Comments

Party of the Weekend.

Party of the Weekend.

The Fort, located on 28 Locust St, is one of the coolest recording studios we’ve stumbled upon in Bushwick. Last year we featured them in our Bushwick Guide as a “studio with style.” This year, we were sad to hear from owner Jim Bentley that they were, like many businesses, having trouble making ends meet. They’re coming up on their 10th anniversary, and are throwing a “black tie” rock’n'roll fundraiser happening at multiple spaces indoors and outdoors this Saturday. (That’s right, on 4/20!). Free food, drinks, and MUSIC. Read on.

What’s been going on at 3rd Ward lately? Well, it looks like they’ll be spreading the Brooklyn word to our Philly counterparts. Last year they secured a coworking and teaching space in Philadelphia’s South Kensington neighborhood. This month they will open the space, which is was once a church and later a factory and comes in at a whopping 27,000 square feet. Their curriculum will feature culinary, arts, technology, and crafts classes. We’re excited to hear more about how 3rd Ward will settle in PA!

Silent Barn has just announced an Aftermath Class series to accompany their Aftermath Supplies art supplies store, yet another example of how prosperous the new DIY music venue and community space is shaping out to be! These classes – which are quite affordable and run every, or every other, Wednesday evening – act as introductions to a whole realm of skills and trades, from bike repairs to drumming!

The interactive and low-key workshops are all taught by local craftswomen and beginners are always welcome! Let’s take for example Screenprinting - a great craft, one of those art activities you always wanted to try out but didn’t find the time, money, or an able facility. Silent Barn has a 4-hour screenprinting workshop series this week for only $15. We don’t think it gets much better than that! We interviewed the founder of the series, Arielle Avenia, to learn more about the classes, the Aftermath art supplies store, the Silent Barn community and…synthetic hair? Read on!
